FEU stuns NU, Ateneo overpowers UE to close first round of UAAP Season 85
Far Eastern University pulled off an upset against National University, 47-44, to close the first round of UAAP Season 85 on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
NU center Omar John cut the Bulldogs' deficit to just a single point, 45-44, with 1:25 left, but an LJ Gonzales basket with 17.6 left gave the Tamaraws a three-point advantage. Kean Baclaan tried to tie the game but to no avail, which gave the Morayta-based squad their second win in the season.
Bryan Sajonia had 12 points for the Tamaraws, while Gonzales had 9 points. John topped the Bulldogs in scoring with 9 points, while John Lloyd Clemente and Jake Figueroa had 8 points each.
Earlier, Ateneo de Manila University overpowered University of the East, 91-76. Dave Ildefonso tallied 20 points while Kai Ballungay had 14 for the Blue Eagles' fifth win. Kyle Paranada and Harvey Pagsanjan tallied 17 points each in the UE loss which brought them to 3-4.
At the end of the first round, UP sit atop the standings at 6-1, while Ateneo and NU are at 5-2. Adamson, UE, and La Salle all have 3-4 cards. FEU (2-5) and UST (1-6) are at the bottom of the standings.
UAAP action will be back on Saturday to commence the second round of the tournament.
