Converge fends off San Miguel rally, bags back-to-back wins
Converge squandered a huge lead, but flaunted some endgame composure to stun San Miguel, 106-102, in the 2022 PBA Commissioner's Cup on Friday at the PhilSports Arena.
The FiberXers led by as many as 17 points early in the third period, 65-48, after Maverick Ahanmisi fired a triple to open the frame but San Miguel battled and took the lead back on a layup from big man Mo Tautuaa, 96-95, with 5:30 left to play in the fourth.
Mike Digregorio then buried a three-pointer to tie things up at 100-all and ignite an 11-2 closing run for Converge as the wards of rookie head coach Aldin Ayo completed the upset win.
San Miguel outscored Converge both in the third and fourth periods, but the FiberXers' early cushion allowed them to hold off the Beermen, who were looking to bounce back from a 113-87 loss to Bay Area.
Import Quincy Miller led Converge with a double-double of 24 points and 16 rebounds to go along with nine monster blocks, three assists, and three steals to bring Converge to a 3-2 card.
Aljun Melecio provided the lift with his 18 points and seven assists while Jeron Teng and Digregorio chipped in 13 and 12 markers apiece.
CJ Perez starred for the Beermen with 29 points, six rebounds, and five assists while Tautuaa chimed in with 23 markers, 10 boards, and two dimes as San Miguel played without June Mar Fajardo.
