Kiefer Ravena shares what it's like to grow up in a house full of athletes

Kiefer Ravena grew up in a house full of athletes.

His father Bong is a basketball player, while his mother Mozzy is a volleyball player. Kiefer and his brother Thirdy followed their dad's footsteps while youngest Dani played their mom's sport.

One might wonder how it is like growing up in a house full of athletes, and in an interview on podcast "Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel," Kiefer gave a glimpse of their childhood.

"Growing up like, for me, it was really love at first sight with basketball. It was basketball from the beginning and then growing up, I'd say it was [a] very hostile environment," Kiefer said.

Kiefer said he and his siblings often competed with each other in their household.

"Whoever wants to watch TV for the remote, whoever wakes up the earliest you know, things like that. So when it comes to competition, it's just natural for us," he said.

"Even though somebody loses, he or she, my sister, my brother, or me would find some other way to get back at that person whether trying to get one over him. That's just how it is," he added.

Like in any other family, the kids will stop fighting when the parents come in.

"It always stops when my mom asks for it because she wants to watch her Koreanovela as well," Kiefer said.

Growing up in a house with sporty siblings also means Kiefer is the captain of the team. While he has the same approach in leading his two younger siblings, he has different ways of communicating with the two.

"In terms of being tough, I treat them the same because we're athletes and I'm a firm believer of 'what Thirdy gets, you (Dani) should also get', because you're only gonna get straight things from me. I won't sugarcoat anything. I won't tell you what you only need to hear, but I'll be very picky," Kiefer said.

He said, however, that as a leader, he knows his way for communicating with Thirdy and communicating with Dani.

"That's just how I was able to work, work my way with them in terms of delivering a message, especially when it comes to how they play or their games and how they are when it comes to their attitude, you know, things like that," he said.

The three siblings are charting their own paths here and abroad, with Kiefer and Thirdy playing in the Japan B.League while Dani is turning professional as she joins the Akari Chargers in the Premier Volleyball League.
