Lyceum stuns Letran, UE upsets Adamson in Filoil cagefest


Lyceum of the Philippines University and University of the East scored upsets over separate foes on Tuesday in the FilOil EcoOil 15th Preseason Cup at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.

The LPU Pirates pulled off a 79-69 victory over back-to-back NCAA champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran to bounce back and improve to 4-1 in Group B while the Knights dropped to 2-1.

Leading by a hair late in the fourth, 70-69, the gritty Pirates unleashed a 9-0 run highlighted by two triples from John Barba and one long bomb from Mclaude Guadaña.

Barba finished with a team-high 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Maverick Venoya and Renzo Navarro each poured 13 markers.

UE also pulled off a huge win over fellow UAAP team Adamson University, 70-63, to push its card up to 3-4. The Soaring Falcons, meanwhile, dropped to 4-2.

Meanwhile, NCAA's San Sebastian College-Recoletos cruised to a 100-96 drubbing of University of Santo Tomas with Alex Desoyo leading the Stags with 13 points off the bench.

San Sebastian improved to 2-1 in Group B while the Growling Tigers slid to 1-2.
