PBA bares plans for Season 47, hints at adding two more teams
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Wednesday finally bared its plans for Season 47, which the league eyes to open on June 5.
According to commissioner Willie Marcial, the new season will kick off with the Philippine Cup expected to run until September 2 followed by the import-flavored Commissioner's Cup from October 2 to January 25.
The season-ending Governors' Cup, meanwhile, is slated from February 1 until May 10 while the East Asia Super League (EASL), which the league forged a partnership with, is tipped to run in the middle of the second conference.
Included in the league's calendar are the All-Star festivities, out of town games, and one out of the country match.
But aside from these dates, one of the highlights of PBA's next moves is the possibility of expanding the teams to 14.
"We also talked about how to further expand the revenue base of the PBA. Willie (Marcial) reported to us that there are some interested new teams [and] new owners coming in to join the PBA," shared PBA chairman Ricky Vargas in a press conference.
"At least one of them has a strong interest to come in so we started looking at expanding to 14 because expanding to 13 may be more difficult to manage. The board actually agreed that maybe we should really look into expanding to 14."
