Magnolia coach Chito Victolero pays tribute to Alaska

He may always be on the other side of the court but Magnolia head coach Chito Victolero has always been a fan of Alaska.

And to hear about Aces' upcoming exit from the league, Victolero said he himself was saddened by the news.

"It's a sad news for us. You know, I grew up watching their games. I would watch Johnny A, JoLas [Jojo Lastimosa], and Bong Hawkins," Victolero said in Filipino following their 112-109 win over NLEX on Wednesday. "They really gave us a great memory and great games."

Victolero also said he empathizes with Abarrientos, who, serves as one of his assistant coaches.

He said that the 5-foot-7 legendary player-turned-coach plays a huge part in their current program, which he said came from his time playing as one of the stars for Alaska. Abarrientos suited up for Alaska from 1993 to 2001 and was part of the historic grand slam team in 1996.

"Johnny A gives us a lot of experiences, basketball IQ, and a lot of help in making the players adjust," he said. "I feel for him and of course, there's sadness."
