Gilas Pilipinas drawn with New Zealand, Korea, India in 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers
The Philippines will face tough opponents on its road to the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Gilas Pilipinas has been pooled in Group A with New Zealand, South Korea, India and during the draw ceremony on Tuesday night (Manila time) held at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland.
80 countries will shoot for a spot at the World Cup but only 32 squads will be able to book their tickets for the World Cup which the Philippines will host alongside Indonesia, and Japan.
The Philippines will host the final phase of the 2023 World Cup at the Philippine Arena while some games in the group phase will be staged in Okinawa and Jakarta.
The World Cup continental qualifiers will run in six windows from November 2021 to February 2023 with the Philippine and Japan already assured of slots for the World Cup while Indonesia need to finish in the top eight of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup to earn an outright berth.
The World Cup is slated from August 25 to September 10, 2023. This is also the first time in FIBA's history that three nations will be hosting the prestigious global cagefest.
