No word yet on FIBA Asia Cup's fate amid surging COVID-19 cases in Indonesia —SBP

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas said there is no word yet from FIBA leadership regarding the fate of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup in Indonesia, which is currently experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases.

SBP president Al Panlilio said there are no talks yet whether there would be any changes in the staging of the continental cagefest.

However, he said that there would be a meeting on Thursday among the FIBA members.

"We do have a FIBA Asia Mid-Term Congress tomorrow. I am sure it will [be] discussed," Panlilio said.

Indonesia has recorded 47,899 new cases on July 13 alone, leading to a 38,644 seven-day average.

The Southeast Asian country, which has recorded over 2.60 million total cases, was also the latest country to be included in the Philippines' list of nations with travel bans.

The FIBA Asia Cup is scheduled on August 17 to 29 in Jakarta.

Gilas Pilipinas is tipped to reconvene in a bubble camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna in preparation for the tournament.
