Some people say coaching is a thankless job, but for College of Saint Benilde basketball coach TY Tang, it's one of the most fulfilling things he has done.
In Chino Trinidad's report on "24 Oras," the head tactician for the Blazers talked about the importance of a coach's presence for young athletes.
"Malaking bagay 'yung magkaroon ka ng mentor lalo na kapag nasa 18-24 years old ka because that's the time wherein you try to get to know yourself more, you try to mold yourself to what kind of a person you want to be," he said.
Tang, who has been coaching Benilde since 2016, also spends his time teaching basketball basics to children.
For him, the joy of coaching doesn't get any better than that experience.
"Makita ko lang isang bata na four years old mag-start matuto mag-dribble, makikita mo 'yung happiness sa kanya genuine—sa mukha, sa mata," he said.
"Pag tingin mo dun sa magulang, makikita mo 'yung magulang napakasaya dahil nakita niya 'yung anak niya na tuwang-tuwa. 'Yun 'yung purity of it e," he added.
But more than the skills, Tang wants young players to learn how to persevere in the face of adversity.
"Katulad ko hindi naman ako kalakihan, hindi naman ako katangkaran. Ang ginagamit ko lang talaga is 'yung utak ko tsaka puso ko, paano ko ma-o-overcome kung ano man 'yung mga hurdles and challenges na nasa harapan ko."
Last NCAA season, the Blazers finished the men's tournament with a 9-9 record.
