Barangay Ginebra bags PBA Philippine Cup title after closing out TNT
Barangay Ginebra bagged the PBA Philippine Cup championship after closing out TNT, 82-78, in Game 5 of finals series on Wednesday.
The Gin Kings faced a 73-68 deficit with five minutes left in the fourth, but back to back triples from Stanley Pringle seized the momentum for the team, 76-73.
LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar then pulled off an alley-oop with two minutes left to extend Ginebra's lead to five. Joe Devance added another insurance basket with 56 seconds on the clock, 80-73.
Simon Enciso and Samboy De Leon hit layups to get Tropang Giga within one possession with nine seconds left.
De Leon then gave up a foul, but Tenorio drained both shots from the charity stripe which virtually shut the door on TNT, 82-77.
Enciso's last-gasp trey then missed the mark, but Troy Rosario was fouled after getting the rebound. He made the first free throw and missed the second, but Aguilar secured the final board to seal the game.
Tenorio, who finished with 10 points and six assists, was named the Finals Most Valuable Player.
Tropang Giga played without key players Ray Parks and Jayson Castro, who are both nursing injuries.
The championship is Ginebra's first All-Filipino conference title in 13 years. It is also coach Tim Cone's fifth Philippine Cup title.
