PBA says Season 45 may be reduced to 2 conferences amid COVID-19 threat

The Philippine Basketball Association is looking to shorten Season 45 following the extension of the enhanced community quarantine.

In a press release on Tuesday, the league said the usual three-conference format may be reduced to two conferences.

PBA earlier suspended its games on March 11 amid the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“The leaning of the board right now is two conferences. Pero kapag humaba pa ang current situation, baka maging isang conference na lang," said PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial.

The two-conference format is not new in the PBA. Back in 2004, the league had one import-laden conference in addition to the Philippine Cup.

PBA then brought back the three-conference format in 2010.

Before the quarantine, the PBA held one game which saw the San Miguel Beermen dominate over the Magnolia Hotshots, 94-78, on opening day.

As for the D-League, Marcial said it will push through if the collegiate leagues scrap their seasons.

Both the NCAA and the UAAP announced the cancellation of their respective tournaments.

Meanwhile, the PBA board is set to hold the inaugural 3x3 tournament once the games have resumed. --MGP, GMA News
