MPBL files game-fixing raps vs SOCCSKSARGEN Marlins players, others

The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has filed criminal complaints against 10 players of the SOCCSKSARGEN Marlins and several others before the Department of Justice.

Assisted by the National Bureau of Investigation, MPBL Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes filed a complaint for multiple counts of betting, game-fixing and points shaving against 21 individuals, including three Chinese nationals, on Tuesday.

The MPBL recently suspended the entire team for alleged game-fixing.

Senator Manny Pacquiao, former Sarangani congressman and the founder of the regional league, said he would take over team management for "house cleaning."

The MPBL alleged that the violations took place in Pasay, Pasig, Navotas, Caloocan, Muntinlupa, Batangas City, Bacoor, Cavite; Malolos, Bulacan; Angeles, Pampanga; and Bacolod City on several occasions from July to October.

Marlins players Kevin Espinosa, Jake Diwa, Exequiel Biteng, Jerome Juanico, Matthew Bernabe, Julio Magbanua, Jr., Abraham Santos, John Patrick Rabe, Ryan Regalado, and Ricky Morillo were listed as respondents.

Also included in the complaint were Sonny Uy, Serafin Matias, EJ Avila, Niño Dionisio, Ferdinand Melocoton, Nice Ilagan, Janus Lozada, Joshua Alcober, and three Chinese nationals identified only as "Mr. Sung," "Kein," and "Emma."

Under Presidential Decree No. 483, conviction of betting, game-fixing, or point shaving is punishable by imprisonment of four to six years for game officials or players and officials or employees in sports agencies, and two to four years for any other offender. —NB, GMA News
