Top rookie pick CJ Perez looked as good as advertised as he led Columbian to a stunning 124-118 victory over powerhouse San Miguel Beer to open their Philippine Cup campaign on Friday at Cuneta Astrodome.

Nicknamed "Baby Beast" during his exploits in the NCAA, the former Lyceum star finished with 26 points to lead Columbian, which finished last season's all-Filipino conference with just a single win.

Jackson Corpuz added 21 points for the Dyip, which got contributions from multiple unheralded role players in toppling a Beerman squad that has won each of the last four Philippine Cup tournaments.

Columbian overcame a 34-point outburst from Arwind Santos. Five-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo had 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Beermen.

Terrence Romeo had a quiet night in his San Miguel debut, finishing with just seven points in 12 minutes off the bench. —JST, GMA News
