Helterbrand announces retirement from PBA

Ginebra Gin Kings' Jayjay Helterbrand announced on Monday that he is hanging up his jersey after spending 17 years in the PBA, all with one of the league's most popular teams.

"That would be my last game as a player... but hopefully, I'll still be around. Hopefully, I can have a spot as an assistant coach or something," Helterbrand said in an interview on CNN-Philippines.

Helterbrand's announcement came following Ginebra's title-clinching win over Meralco Bolts last Friday for the PBA Governor's Cup crown. The Gin Kings won the best of seven series, 4-3.

"This one one of my most special ones for me because it will probably my last as a player," he said.

Helterbrand said he has already informed team management of his decision and that they have been very supportive of it.

The other half of Ginebra's The Fast and the Furious backcourt tandem (the other being Mark Caguioa), Helterbrand finished his career with six championships, one Finals MVP nod, an MVP award in 2009, two Best Player of the Conference awards, seven All-Star selections, and two Mythical First Team recognition.  — RSJ/KBK, GMA News
