Angara is new chairman of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas

Sen. Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara on Monday was voted the new chairman of the Samahan ng Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

Asked about his plans for the SBP, Angara told GMA News Online about the importance of continuity in the projects being carried out by the group that had led to international success in hosting and performances in sports events.

"The new leadership identified some areas aside from interbational competition including greater grassroots programs around the country, increased support for women's basketball, and adopting to some of the changes in FIBA rules and schedules," said Angara, who replaced Cagayan De Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno as chairman.

Angara currently chairs the Senate committees on ways and means and local government. The Senate sport committee is chaired by boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

MVP Sports Foundation head Al Panlilio, meanwhile, replaced Manuel V. Pangilinan as the group's president. —JST, GMA News
