Benjie Paras downplays hype on Kobe as NBA prospect

This early, Kobe Paras is already capturing the attention of some scouts as a possible NBA prospect.

An NBA scouting website took note of his performance at the 2015 Adidas Global Nations camp, listing him as one of the top wing players of class 2016 and 2017.

"He has the physical profile, athleticism and shooting ability of a high-major wing, and potentially an NBA prospect," said video scout Mike Schmitz in his report.

Kobe's father Benjie, however, does not want to think of him playing in the NBA - at least for now.

"We don't look at it that way. Parang take it one step at a time," the two-time PBA Most Valuable Player told reporters after the Rise Legacy Night on Saturday in Mandaluyong City.

The younger Paras is currently attending LA Cathedral and has attracted even the Los Angeles press after playing for the Phantoms. He picked up several scholarship offers from various schools, but ended up committing to the UCLA Bruins.

Benjie said he wants his son to concentrate on what is in front of him rather than look too much ahead.

"As of now, I want him to focus on his last year dun sa high school. And then we'll see what will happen in college," said the PBA legend.

Schmitz, however, already has an idea of what is in store for Paras' future.

"He has a chance to be a high-level player in the Pac-12 and set himself up for a successful future beyond the college ranks, possibly in the NBA depending on how his skill-set evolves," he said. - RAF, GMA News
