By RENEE FOPALAN, GMA News
The GlobalPort Batang Pier took advantage of an all-Filipino Alaska cast late in the second half to pull off a 117-104 overtime win on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
"We took that advantage na nag all-Flipino lang sila, di pinalaro si [Romeo] Travis ng second half," admitted GlobalPort head coach Pido Jarencio. "We took the twice to beat advantage. Para sa fans at sa management itong win na ito."
Alaska actually led by nine at the half with import Romeo Travis on the floor. Head coach Alex Compton, however, decided to rest his import in the second half, while Omar Krayem and Jarrid Famous led the Batang pier to take the lead halfway through the third. A 9-0 run gave GlobalPort an eight-point lead, 66-58, with 4:22 remaining in the game. Heading into the final turn, the Batang Pier were still ahead, 74-67.
Come the fourth, the Aces leaned on key contributions from Eric Menk and Rome Dela Rosa to tie the game at 91-all at the 3:55 mark. Alaska led by as much as five entering the final two minutes, before the duo of Krayem and Pringle struck again. A five-point swing from the two tied the game, but Nonoy Baclao converted at the other end to push Alaska ahead. A pair of freethrows from Stanley Pringle tied the game anew, as the two teams failed to score in the final 39 seconds for overtime.
In overtime, GlobalPort went to Terrence Romeo, who led his squad in establishing a 14-2 blast to lead by 12 with 1:11 left. Five more from Romeo closed out the game. - GMA News
