The Purefoods Star Hotshots showed no mercy en route to an 120-86 demolition of the Alaska Aces in the opening game of their best-of-three Commissioner's Cup quarterfinals series on Friday at SMART Araneta Coliseum.

"I'd be a lot happier if this was Game 2 instead of Game 1. All we did is win Game 1," said Purefoods head coach Tim Cone. "This one doesn't mean much unless we come out and beat them on Sunday."

The Aces were coming off a grueling win on Wednesday against Ginebra that clinched their playoff spot against Purefoods, and it showed. The defending champions jumped to a 31-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

All Purefoods starters scored in double figures, with Denzel Bowles leading his team tallying 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. James Yap posted 18 points, while PJ Simon added 13 points, going perfect from the field. Marc Pingris had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Joe Devance hit 10 points with eight boards and seven assists. Mark Barroca led the bench with 14 markers.

"We made a good start, got them on their heels that they didn't have time to recover. We're so focused coz we know how good they are coming back from 20-point leads," Cone added. "Bounce back ability is very high for them we were moving the ball extremely well. It's just one of those nights."

The coach was quick to downplay the big win, citing that celebrations have to wait until they've eliminated the Aces:

"They're gonna use this as motivation. We're not that good; they're ot that bad. We can't be happy about this one we have to come back out with a similar effort."

Damion James was the only Alaska starter in double figures, scoring 21 points with 10 rebounds. The rest of the starters were held down to just 10 points, with center Sonny Thoss going scoreless. RJ Jazul and Vic Manuel posted 12 and 11 points off the bench, respectively.
