PBA: AZ Reid wants championship for SMB in Govs' Cup
By MARISSE PANALIGAN, GMA News
San Miguel Beer just ended their Commissioners' Cup campaign after failing to secure a quarterfinals berth, but Arizona Reid is not very keen on going back to the United States for a quick vacation.
"Listen, all I want to do is play basketball. I have no need to go home. Why would I go home when I have work to do?" the import told reporters after the Beermen's 106-94 victory over GlobalPort on Tuesday night.
Reid is supposed to suit up for SMB in the season-ending Governors' Cup, but San Miguel was forced to call him up earlier than expected in the hopes of saving their doomed playoff bid this conference.
The two-time Best Import led the team to four wins, but those were not enough for them to advance to the quarterfinal phase. Reid, however, vowed to help the franchise win their 21st championship in the upcoming Governors' Cup.
"I don't wanna be one of those imports that come here 10 times and never win. I need a championship bad," said Reid, who has yet to win a ring in the PBA.
Despite his explosive offensive output, the former Rain or Shine reinforcement said helping San Miguel become a winning team is more important for him than piling up his own statistics.
"My job is not to score 30 a game. My job is to make everybody better, play great defense, and help my teammates score," he said.
Reid said he is 'a little angry' about their early exit but accepts it as a part of basketball.
"Even great players didn't always make the playoffs. Michael Jordan didn't always make it, Kobe Bryant didn't always make it," he said.
He said, however, that this setback will make them more eager to stage their comeback in the Governors' Cup.
"We have a bad taste in our mouth, so we'd be hungry come next conference for sure." - RAF, GMA News
