Meralco import Josh Davis has been a pillar for the Bolts this conference.
But if Purefoods coach Tim Cone had his way, the cornrowed Kawhi Leonard lookalike would be playing for the Hotshots to start the conference.
"Josh was the guy I wanted to bring over," Cone said on Tuesday following Purefoods' 103-96 victory over Barako Bull. "But we didn't wanna pay the buyoff fee."
Davis played for the Austin Spurs in the NBA D-League, which requires overseas teams that want to sign its players to pay a buyout fee.
"Josh was my favorite player in the D-League. He's like Chris Ellis times two. Bigger height. I really like Josh," said the two-time Grand Slam coach of Davis.
The Hotshots settled on resident import Marqus Blakely instead while waiting for Daniel Orton or Denzel Bowles, who were both still playing in the Chinese league to start the Commissioner's Cup.
Blakely carried the team to a 3-0 start before passing the baton to Orton, but the former Orlando Magic big man left after three games following his tirade against boxing icon Manny Pacquiao. Bowles was called in as a replacement.
In contrast to Purefoods' topsy-turvy run, Meralco settled in nicely with Davis. Unfortunately for Purefoods, Davis will stand on the other side of the court as they clash with Meralco on Friday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum. —JST, GMA News
