PBA: With spirited performance for Meralco, Jai Reyes proves himself to Kia after failing to get contract offer

Fueled by the desire to prove himself to Kia, the team that selected him in the dispersal draft, Jai Reyes tallied impressive numbers in his debut game for Meralco in the Commissioner's Cup.

The former Ateneo star finished with 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists, giving the Bolts a much-needed lift to win 90-80 against the PJ Ramos-led Carnival on Friday night.

"Sila nag draft saken e, sa dispersal draft," said Reyes of the Kia franchise. "Dinraft nila ko pero di nagkatuloy sa signing. So I wanted to prove to them na kaya ko rin naman maglaro."

With Meralco's starting guard Mike Cortez down with a swollen knee, the perfect stage had been set for Reyes' inspired performance.

"I was surprised also because I was just activated last game sa Ginebra," the guard said about his career night. "I'm thankful lang sa opportunity na nabigay sa 'kin."

Reyes played 34 minutes for the Bolts, shooting 3-of-8 from the three point arc and provided a stablizing presence in the Meralco back court.

Asked whether he should be given more minutes with his output, the guard said he will leave the decision to the coaching staff.

"I hope so, but it's not for me to decide," he said. "I'm a player, my role is to be ready when my number is called upon."

"Hopefully I get more playing time but if it doesn't, basta manalo lang kami, 'yun ang masaya e." - RAF, GMA News
