Confident of Skywalker’s recovery, ex-wife says Samboy Lim can defy science
By AMITA O. LEGASPI, GMA News
If basketball legend Samboy Lim defied gravity during his prime as a national team standout and as a professional cager, it appears he could also defy science and medicine, his wife Darlene Berberabe told reporters on Thursday.
Berberabe, who's already separated from the retired superstar, said doctors had prepared the family for a long period recovery for Lim.
Berberabe, who's already separated from the retired superstar, said doctors had prepared the family for a long period recovery for Lim.
“Ako kasi I think Samboy can defy science. No one said na pwedeng maglakad sa ere but he’s the Skywalker," Berberabe told reporters.
"The doctors were also surprised with his recovery and many people are praying so collective prayers can really bring him to good health,” she added.
"We are hoping na tuloy tuloy na, natutuwa kami na he’s out of coma because the doctors were telling us na because of what happened to him, matatagalan na…pwedeng maging in coma siya for several years,” Berberabe said.
The 52-year-old Lim, a member of the PBA’s Greatest Players list, collapsed on Nov. 28 during an exhibition match with former players at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City. He was brought to the Medical City for treatment.
Lim came out of his coma on Jan. 14.
Although separated, Berberabe remained in charge of caring for Lim.

She said that the family was happy that Lim’s condition was getting better.
“He smiles pag meron akong kinukwentong magand, pag may masakit yung mukha niya parang nasasaktan din,” Berberabe said.
“I’m principally in charge of taking care of him. I’m in charge of fund raising kasi medyo mahal yung medical bill and the continuing care that’s another challenge,” she said.
Lim’s hospital bills reached around P2.8 million and his room has the medical equipment and supplies needed, a round-the-clock nurse care, and a daily physical therapy program.
“Isang araw nung bumisita kami lumabas yung entrance exam results sa college, yung anak namin na 17 years old, nakapasa dun sa tatlong pinag exam-an niya. First time namin nakita na, wala kasi pa siyang boses, it seemed as if he really cried. It was long, like 15 minutes na kami ay nag-iyakan mag-iina,” she told reporters.
Berberabe, the president of the Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund, was at the Senate Thursday morning to attend a Blue Ribbon subcommittee hearing. —NB, GMA News
