PBA: Danny I sees June Mar winning second straight MVP
By MARISSE PANALIGAN, GMA News
Danny Ildefonso sees reigning Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo on his way to earning another top award with the way he's playing so far in the 2015 Philippine Cup.
"Hindi malayo kay June Mar 'yun," Ildefonso told reporters after Meralco lost to San Miguel Beer on Friday. "Maging healthy lang si June Mar, back to back 'yan."
After playing nine games, Fajardo leads the league in points and rebounds per game, averaging 19.11 markers and 13.33 boards per outing. He shoots an impressive 58.93 percent from the field, and also ranks number one in blocks with 17 swats.
Ildefonso, who mentored the 25-year-old Fajardo during his stint with Petron Blaze, experienced first-hand the towering center's huge improvement as he guarded him in the absence of injured Meralco big man Reynel Hugnatan.
"Napagod ako kay June Mar. Mabigat na malaki pa, magaling pa gumalaw," said Ildefonso, who played 26 minutes for the Bolts. "Mautak din."
Ildefonso said he was happy with the way things are going for his protege, who gained valuable experience during his stint in the FIBA World Cup playing for Gilas Pilipinas.
"Malayo pa mararating ni June Mar. Kasi 6'10 is 6'10," said Ildefonso, the last man to win back-to-back MVP awards in 2000 and 2001. "Panahon niya ngayon." — JST, GMA News
