Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes responds to detractor: 'You want my job?'

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes steered the national team to its first appearance on the world basketball stage after 36 years, but he still had his fair share of critics during the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Things got a little testy on Thursday after Reyes decided to respond with one detractor.

A certain Karlo Ong tweeted that Reyes should be replaced with another coach to call the shots for Gilas, to which he replied with, "Sure, you want my job?"

Ong, who uses the handle @ongkarlo, deleted his Twitter account as Pinoy fans rallied to support and defend Reyes in the face of criticism.

Another user with the handle @mytwocents30 said that Tab Baldwin, who served as consultant to Gilas, is a better coach than Reyes.

The user, however, mistyped the name as "Tab Williams." Reyes and other users poked fun on the error, which was corrected in later tweets.

Reyes led Gilas Pilipinas to a 1-4 record in the World Cup, losing heartbreakers to Croatia, Greece, Argentina, and Puerto Rico before finally posting a win against Senegal for their last game in Spain.

That was the first victory for the national team on the world stage in 40 years.

The coach also steered the team to a silver finish in the FIBA Asia Championships last year to book the ticket to the World Cup. Earlier this year, Gilas Pilipinas bagged the bronze in the FIBA Asia Cup also under Reyes' leadership. — JST, GMA News
