Why Jimmy Alapag changed his mind about retiring from Gilas Pilipinas

After his brilliant performance in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, there was already a lot of pressure on team captain Jimmy Alapag to defer his retirement from Gilas Pilipinas.

Philippine basketball's "Mighty Mouse" had given up his spot for the national team for the Asian Games basketball tournament later this month.

But after the disqualification of naturalized star center Andray Blatche for the competition, as well as injuries that have hampered fellow guard Jayson Castro, the team's brain trust asked Alapag to try and save the day one more time for the team.

"I spoke to coach Chot (Reyes), and he asked me if I'd reconsider. And I know how much of an honor it is to play for our country especially on the international stage," Alapag told Jessica Soho in an interview on "State of the Nation" on Thursdya night.

"I really loved playing with my brothers on this team. It gave me one last opportunity to go out there with them on the court," Alapag said.

With his retirement from the team postponed, Alapag said he is lucky to have his family's support in once again playing for the Gilas Pilipinas.

"They're my number one supporters and they understand the sacrifice that goes into playing for a national team," Alapag said. He is married and is in the process of adopting a son with actress LJ Moreno, who is also pregnant with a daughter.

"They're just get excited I'll get one more opportunity with our national team."

Fans also rejoiced on twitter after Alapag announced his change of heart, expressing their thanks to the hero that carried the national team in the World Cup.

Alapag, who is dubbed "Mighty Mouse" by Pinoy fans due to his solid performance despite his short stature, said he is thankful for their support.

"It's been overwhelming and humbling just to hear all the support and the love and the prayers," Alapag said.
