Gilas Pilipinas weapon vs homesickness: Skype session with 'lonely wives club'

For Gilas Pilipinas, the hardest part of their buildup for a pair of international tournaments is the time they need to spend away from home.

 

The team is currently in Miami, where they are beginning their buildup for the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain in August and the Asian Games basketball tournament in South Korea in September.

 

To stave off the early pangs of homesickness, loved ones of Gilas players and coaches at the home of coach Chot Reyes. There, his wife Cherry hosted dinner for the group that called themselves the "Lonely hearts Gilas wives."

 

Former Gilas team manager Butch Antonio attended the gathering and posted a picture: "Shout out to Gilas! Am now manager of the gilas lonely hearts club!"

 

 

Meanwhile, halfway around the world, the Gilas players also gathered after practice, setting up a Skype session with their loved ones from home.
 

 

 

The Gilas players have relished the little pieces of home they could find on their journey to prepare for the Philippines' return to the world basketball stage. Earlier this week, they were hosted by some Filipinos in the Miami area for a luncheon of Pinoy food.

After their Miami sojourn, the players will fly to Spain to continue training, head to France for tuneup games, before returning to Spain for the World Cup. — Joel Locsin/JST, GMA News
