Aside from a possible roster upgrade in newly naturalized NBA player Andray Blatche, the Philippine Gilas men’s national basketball team will sport another change when they take to the court at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain in August.

Not only do the new uniforms by Nike feature the national colors, but they boast of the apparel company's Sphere fabric that is more "lightweight, breathable, and durable."

The team jerseys made their debut on Thursday evening, according to a report on GMA News' "Saksi."

Emblazoned on the uniform front is "Pilipinas," while the back features an "aerographic" design depicting the eight-rayed sun in the Philippine flag.

But other than the look, Nike said the uniforms are made of fabric that allows better sweat management.

It said articulated armholes provide a "better and easier range of motion" and laser cut perforations promise better ventilation.

“The new uniforms are lighter in weight, which is an advantage for us when we play. Together with the heat management, the uniforms will keep us comfortable through the games,” said point guard LA Tenorio.

“With the sun on the backs of all players, it’s a gentle reminder to each player of its symbolic meaning of unity and sovereignty for our country,” added forward Marc Pingris.

Meanwhile, coach Vincent "Chot" Reyes noted basketball is more than a sport for Filipinos.

"It is in our blood, our DNA, woven into the Filipino culture. The new uniforms will be worn with pride, on the world stage in Spain as we show the world what Filipino basketball is all about and bring pride to the Philippines,” he said.

Meanwhile, replicas of the new uniforms will be available starting July 1 in select stores, Nike said. - Joel Locsin / AMD, GMA News
