The San Mig Super Coffee Mixers pulled off a huge upset, defeating league-leaders Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, 83-79, in front of more than 20,000 fans on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, in the 2013-14 PBA Philippine Cup.

Mark Barroca led San Mig Coffee with 16 points, six assists and three steals. The Mixers also snapped their two-game skid and Ginebra's six-game winning streak.

"[I] wish we could've played this way the whole conference, but it's better late than never," said San Mig head coach Tim Cone as his team barely improved to a 4-7 win-loss card. "[It was] 80% mental for us [and] 20% physical. We've [been] beating ourselves up over the last few weeks trying to put the negativity away."

Ginebra meanwhile suffered loss number two, to stay a half game ahead of the 8-2 Petron Blaze Boosters.

A Rafi Reavis bucket gave San Mig a one-point lead to start the payoff period, before LA Tenorio dished off to Jay-R Reyes to regain the advantage, 68-67. A 9-2 blast, capped by a Marc Pingris buzzer-beater bumped San Mig's lead up to six, before Chris Ellis banked in a long bomb to slice the lead in half, 76-73. Mark Barroca then connected on a banker, before Reavis' breakaway layup trickled in for a seven-point spread, 80-73.

A Slaughter one-handed putback made it a four-point game with a little over three minutes remaining, but Mark Barroca completed a defensive stop on what was supposed to be a breakaway layup for LA Tenorio. With less than two minutes remaining, the Mixers committed a turnover, but Ginebra couldn't capitalize, missing anew from deep.

Ginebra then sent Joe Devance to the line, and he did not disappoint San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone by sinking two charities. Tenorio was left open at the top of the key for a three but missed, and the offensive rebound led to another unsuccesful attempt from deep from Japeth Aguilar.

With 20.8 seconds remaining, Barroca split from the line, but Tenorio's three-pointer came too late with five seconds to go, preventing any form of a comeback.

"Our big lineup kinda gave them some problems. Contributions from everybody, a well-rounded performance for us, that's what we've been looking for, searching for the whole conference," added Cone, who aims to bring his team to the top six. "This game keeps us alive this conference. Making the top six, top eight."

The Coffee Mixers started the game with a 21-8 blitz behind Mark Barroca and Mark Pingris. Emman Monfort tried to chip away at the lead late in the quarter, but it was Barroca who ended the period with San Mig still ahead, 25-15.

SMC continued to pour it on to start the second, as baskets from Reavis, Simon and Barroca bumped their advantage up to 18, 37-19. The usual suspects in Tenorio, Aguilar and Slaughter tried keep Ginebra afloat, as a Baracael triple cut the lead to 13. San Mig though retained a sizable lead heading into the break, 48-35.

Another Baracael triple early in the third cut the lead to nine, before Aguilar and Josh Urbiztondo completed a five-point swing to make it a four-point affair, 50-46. The Mixers responded with their own 6-0 run, pushing the lead to 10, as Aguilar and Slaughter cashed in on more buckets to get within two, 61-59.

A Tenorio floater finally tied the game at 61-all, but Pinris took it back soon after. A Slaughter hook shot and a split pushed Ginebra ahead, as Barroca and Ellis exchanged baskets with Ginebra still ahead after three, 66-65.

Gunners PJ Simon and James Yap had 15 and 12 points, respectively, with Yap adding 10 boards. Marc Pingris' hustle was also invaluable, with 12 points, seven boards and three assists. The frontline of Yancy De Ocampo, Rafi Reavis and Ian Sangalang also paid dividends against their Ginebra counterparts, compiling 23 caroms.

Japeth Aguilar led Ginebra with a mighty line of 26 points, seven rebounds, three assists and six blocks versus just one turnover, but it was not enough. Top pick of 2013 Greg Slaughter added 14 points, six boards, four dimes and a swat, while LA Tenorio scored 13, though he turned the ball over a team-high five times.

San Mig Coffee connected on just 1-of-11 triple tries, versus Ginebra's 9-of-27 clip, but they made amends with 22 second-chance points and 12 fast break markers, versus just 15 and 4 by BGSM, respectively.  - AMD, GMA News
