Oscars 2025: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo of 'Wicked' open the show with a 'Defying Gravity' performance

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the sensational stars of "Wicked," have opened the show at the 97th Academy Awards.

Ariana, clad in a bold red shimmering ball gown, began with a mellow "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" performance from "The Wizard of Oz."

Meanwhile, in a floral accented white gown, Cynthia followed soon after, performing "Home" by Diana Ross.

The two stars then reunited onstage for an iconic duet performance of "Defying Gravity" from "Wicked," which earned a standing ovation from the star-studded guests of the Oscars 2025.

"Wicked" is nominated in a staggering 10 categories at the Oscars 2025, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Sound, to name a few.

Directed by John Chu, "Wicked" follows the story of Glinda (Ariana) and Elphaba (Cynthia) on their self-discovery journeys and their unlikely friendship at Shiz University, a tale that serves as a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz."

The second act, "Wicked: For Good," premieres in cinemas in 2025.
