Ariana Grande in tears when surprised with Glinda’s original wand from ‘The Wizard of Oz’
Ariana Grande couldn’t help but cry during her guesting on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” after the actress and TV host surprised her with the original Glinda wand from "The Wizard of Oz."
According to Drew, the wand was previously owned by the Smithsonian Institution—the world's largest museum, education, and research complex—but is currently “owned in private hands.”
“For the purposes of our sit-down, they loaned it to us,” Drew said. “Bring out the original Glinda wand, please.”
Ariana was clearly in shock and immediately shed some tears as she held the wand. The audience could also not refrain from turning emotional.
“Thank you guys, it’s been fun. Bye,” Ariana joked, pretending to walk away with the precious item.
Drew thanked everybody on the show for pulling off the surprise. “Literally, we were so excited about you coming here. We were like, okay, let’s get the wand. Let’s get Nonna [Ariana’s grandmother] and all the producers.”
Ariana has been making waves for her portrayal of Glinda in “Wicked,” which premiered in Philippine cinemas on November 20.
Her role was originally portrayed by Billie Burke in the 1939 musical fantasy film, “The Wizard of Oz,” who was depicted wearing a bright pink ball gown and crown, and always held the long wand with a star on top — very much like Ariana in the opening sequences of "Wicked."
The singer-songwriter is a huge fan of “Wicked” and “The Wizard of Oz,” and even cried when she got the role of Glinda.
“Wicked” follows the Good Witch Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) in their self-discovery journey in Shiz University.
It also stars Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard.
