Ed Sheeran on new album ‘Subtract:’ ‘Something that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life’
Ed Sheeran is set to release his sixth album dubbed “Subtract” in May, after nearly two years since his last album “=” (equals) came out.
On Wednesday, the award-winning British singer-songwriter took to Facebook to share what to expect from his upcoming new album.
According to Ed, he's been working on “Subtract” for a decade, “trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album” that people expect from him.
But in 2022, a series of life events changed Ed’s life, making him rethink how he treats his music and art.
“Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a [tumor], with no route to treatment until after the birth,” the 32-year-old singer wrote.
“My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly, and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter,” he added.
These unfortunate events caused Ed to be crippled by fear, depression, and anxiety, but he took advantage of songwriting to let all his frustrations out.
“Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out,” he said.
“And in just over a week, I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts,” he added.
As an artist, Ed assured that “Subtract” will purely represent where he is at this point in life.
“For the first time, I’m not trying to craft an album people will like. [Instead], I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life,” he concluded.
In November 2022, Ed announced a social media hiatus.
“Subtract” is set to be released on May 5, 2023, on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, and iTunes.
