17-year-old Fil-Canadian gets platinum ticket on ‘American Idol’
A 17-year-old Filipino-Canadian just won the hearts of the “American Idol” Season 21 judges!
Tyson Venegas gave his own take on Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind,” as seen on a video shared on the YouTube channel of the TV show.
Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie couldn’t help but give Tyson a standing ovation and the Platinum Ticket, given his technique and his skill as a pianist.
While Lionel said Tyson’s performance was “spot on,” the other two judges commended his skills.
“You sang notes and runs that I haven’t felt in my body in a long time and I felt so connected,” Katy said.
“You are exactly what we look for, what we pray for, and you’re there,” Luke added.
According to Lionel, the Platinum Ticket allows an artist to skip the first round of competitions during Hollywood Week. It gives them time to assess and prepare for future events.
Tyson, who joined a Philippine singing competition when he was 14, was born and raised in Canada by his Filipino parents. His father was also born in Canada.
