'Rick and Morty' to proceed without creator Justin Roiland after Adult Swim cuts ties with him
"Rick and Morty," the beloved long-running cartoon series on Cartoon Network's nighttime programming Adult Swim, will continue without creator Justin Roiland.
The show announced the latest development social media accounts Tuesday, saying "Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland. Rick and Morty will continue."
In fact, the crew is already hard at work on its season 7, it added.
Adult Swim dropped Justin Roiland following the news that Roiland was "charged with felony domestic abuse," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
NBC broke the news on Jan. 12, saying the charges were in connection with "a 2020 incident, according to a criminal complaint filed in May 2020 by the Orange County District Attorney."
Roiland had already appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing and pleaded not guilty to the 2020 incident, NBC continued.
Roiland, who co-created and executive produced "Rick and Morty," and who voices both show's titular characters, was charged "with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit."
No trial date has been set.
According to Deadline, characters which had been voices by Roiland will be recast.
Meanwhile The Hollywood Reporter story says that while "Roiland will always be credited as co-creator, fellow co-creator Dan Harmon will now be the lone showrunner. The show is locked in through season 10." — LA, GMA Integrated News
