Dolly de Leon becomes the first Filipina to be nominated for a BAFTA
Los Angeles — Dolly de Leon breaks another ceiling by being the first Filipina to be nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts or BAFTA in the Best Supporting Actress category, shortly after her historic nomination at the 80th Golden Globe Awards as the first Filipina to be nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture category.
De Leon, who is still in Los Angeles after attending the 80th Golden Globe Awards, reacted to her nomination in our exclusive interview by email.
“I’m so grateful to the BAFTAs for recognizing my performance in ‘Triangle of Sadness.’ I have been working in the Philippines for my whole career and it means so much to have my first English language role honored in this way – and to be in the company of such incredible talent. I’m so proud to be the first Filipina ever nominated in this category! Very grateful to our UK distributor Curzon too!”
De Leon is nominated together with Angela Bassett, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever;” Hong Chau, “The Whale;” Kerry Condon, “The Banshees of Inisherin;” Jamie Lee Curtis, “Everything Everywhere All At Once;” and Carey Mulligan, “She Said.”
De Leon, a first-time BAFTA nominee, joins 13 other first-timers that include the likes of Paul Mescal ("Aftersun"), Danielle Deadwyler ("Till"), Kerry Condon ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), and Albrecht Schuch ("All Quiet on the Western Front").
The BAFTA Film Awards, which highlights some of the best British and international contributions in film of the year, will take place on February 19 at 7 p.m. GMT, with actor Richard E. Grant as host at London’s Royal Festival Hall. — LA, GMA Integrated News
