Lizzo tearfully accepts first Emmy award: ‘All I wanted to see was me in the media’
Right when she was named the Emmy winner for Best Competition Program, Lizzo broke down in happy tears.
This is the singer’s first Emmy for her work as the host and executive producer of “Watch Out For The Big Grrrls.”
The reality show searches for Big Grrrls, Lizzo’s backup dancers, who will join her world tour.
After thanking the show’s cast, crew, and the Emmys, Lizzo tearfully said, “I'm very emotional. The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on the stage with me — the stories that they share. They're not that unique, they just don't get the platform telling stories. Let’s just tell more stories.”
The singer added that when she was young, she wanted to see someone representing her.
“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me, black like me, beautiful like me.
“If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I'll be like, ‘you're gonna see that person but b—, it’s gon’ have to be you.’”
Lizzo then thanked her late father and her Big Grrrls for being part of “the television show that would change their lives forever.”
She added, “They're Emmy award-winning superstars who are going on a world tour. I love you guys so much. God bless y’all. This is for the Big Grrrls.”
