'The Silent Sea' creators used 10,000 square yards for that incredibly immersive outer space set
"The Silent Sea" creators were not kidding when they said they created a realistic and immersive outer space set for the Netflix series.
In a recent virtual press conference, Director Choi Hang Yong revealed having used a vast-sized studio to create the moon and the base situated on the moon.
"We used about five studios so in total there were like 10,000 square yards," Director Choi said.
He added, it wasn't only the size but what that size entailed: "It was technically difficult and when we were making the set, we wanted to make sure that it could provide an immersive environment to the cast so we really put a lot of thought on the texture, the weight, and everything."
Lee Joon, who plays Ryu Taesuk in the series, was in total awe of their set.
"It was so wonderful. It was actually more detailed than you think," said Lee Joon, who happens to be a big space fan. "You know the parts that don't appear on screen? Even those places were so detailed," he added.
"I was really fascinated by the set and I think it was almost too detailed... even the battery inside devices would have my name on it and that level of detail is what makes it a masterpiece" he added.
Meanwhile, show writer Park Eun Kyo said she didn't expect everything she had imagined would "show through in real life."
"This is really technically difficult and the reason why outer space sci-fi is a challenge is because in Korea we don't have much experience in the field," she said.
"When I was writing the script, I wasn't sure that it would be made into a realistic set and it would really show through and be portrayed on the final product," she added.
In fact, she says she was surprised at how it turned out. "It just transcended in my imagination," she said. "It was even bigger because at first I was really worried about the budget and everything but after seeing the set, I was fascinated at the scale of it and the level of detail of it so I was just so happy," she said.
"The Silent Sea" follows a story of an elite crew sent on a mission to Balhae Lunar Research Station, Korea's first lunar base permanently closed five years ago.
As soon as the team landed at the moon, they find unimaginable mysteries lurking inside the station, where they are trapped in isolation. They soon realize they were sent on a deadly mission.
The elite team consists of astrobiologist Song Jian (Bae Doona), captain Han Yunjae (Gong Yoo), chief engineer Ryu Taesuk (Lee Joon), team doctor Doc Hong (Kim Sun-young), chief security officer Gong Soohyuk (Lee Mu-saeng), and pilot Kim Sun (Lee Sung-wook).
The newest Korean Netflix series is written by Park Eun Kyo, directed by Choi Hang-yong, and executive produced by actor Jung Woo-sung.
