Squid Game Season 2 will happen, says director

There are talks on coming up with the second season of the popular Korean series, Squid Game, according to the series director.

"So we are in the talks for season two. It's all in my head. I have the basic storyline, the broad plan, so we're in the brainstorming stages," said Hwang Dong-Hyuk during the special screening of the Netflix series in Hollywood on Monday (November 8).

"I think with the success as big as this one, I almost feel like it would not make sense to create a season two and I also feel like there are going to be some fans kind of trying to stalk me where I live and do something to me if I don't give them a second season so I'm going to go ahead and say there will be a second season but as for when I cannot tell you now. (English) He will come back, he will come back and do something about this world," he added.

The show about impoverished people playing a deadly game to win a fortune has been Netflix's most popular show ever, according to reports.

Lee Jung-Jae, who plays the lead character Seong Gi-hun, told Reuters at the special screening "I just can't believe this is happening. I did not know or ever imagined it would make it this big. I didn't ever think we would get this much love so being here and standing in front of you, everything, I just feel so grateful."

The show has hit headlines for numerous reasons, from controversial Halloween costumes to 'Squid Game' themed protests outside the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

Writer director Hwang Dong-hyuk is stunned by the response to the show, saying "Never in my wildest imaginations did I ever dream that our music would be rearranged and played at huge music festivals or that people would be dressing up as Seong Gi-hun or the people in tracksuits for Halloween and now I hear about kids playing red light, green light in Uganda so these are things that are completely unimaginable and I really don't know how to express it. It feels so surreal."

"Squid Game" has hit number one on Netflix in 80 countries and has been seen already by an estimated 111 million viewers, according to reports.

The series' success echoes that of 2020 Oscar winner 'Parasite', which also showed the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

Park Hae-Soo, who plays one of the contenders, Cho Sang-woo, told Reuters "It's not only the Korean storytelling, it really is a general and everybody's issues that they have with the gap of wealth and really expressing that authentically and honestly. Everybody actually has that rage but I think the Koreans are really able to express that honestly."

But the one question most viewers want to know is, will there be a second season?

"So we are in the talks for season two. It's all in my head. I have the basic storyline, the broad plan, so we're in the brainstorming stages," said Dong-hyuk. He added "I'm going to go ahead and say there will be a second season but as for when I cannot tell you now."
