Ed Asner, main character from Pixar's 'Up,' passes away at 91

Ed Asner, the actor who played Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's "Up," has passed away. He was 91.

The news was announced on the seven-time Emmy Award-winning actor's Twitter account Monday.

"We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head - Goodnight dad. We love you," it read.

Charles Sherman, Asner's representative, also confirmed the update to NBC News, saying that the actor "passed away [Sunday] peacefully surrounded by family."

Apart from the 2009 movie "Up," he was also widely known for his role as Lou Grant on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," among others.
