Joshua Bassett reveals he had near fatal heart failure, septic shock in January
"High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" actor Joshua Bassett revealed that he suffered a near fatal septic shock and heart failure in January.
In an interview with GQ magazine, the singer said that he was hospitalized on Jan. 14, the same day he released his single "Lie, Lie, Lie" and just two days after Olivia Rodrigo released "Drivers License."
"I started getting very ill, and it kept getting worse. I thought it was, like, food poisoning or whatever. It got worse, it got worse, it got worse, it got worse," he said.
Soon, he was hospitalized with “unimaginable pain" and he found out what he was experiencing was septic shock and heart failure.
"[The doctors] told me that I had a 30% chance of survival. They told me that if I had not checked into the hospital within 12 hours, I would have been found [dead] in my apartment."
During his hospitalization, Joshua found himself in the middle of rumors that Olivia's record-breaking hit song was about him and "Girl Meets World" star Sabrina Carpenter.
Despite the clamor, Joshua said he "didn't have any energy to be able to focus on anything but staying alive."
In the interview, Joshua also shared his thoughts about the rumor, and said that "people don't know anything they're talking about."
"[Everyone] is asking me about Sabrina and Olivia," he said. "Why don't we focus on these women for who they are? Let's focus on the art that they're making and how great they are instead of their relationship to a boy." – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
