Rachel Zegler to star as Snow White in Disney’s live action film

"West Side Story" actress Rachel Zegler is set to play the title role on the much awaited Disney "Snow White" live action adaptation!

According to a Deadline report on Tuesday, the actress will star as the captivating princess in the adaptation of the original "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," the film that started it all for the studio's animated features.

Sources told Deadline that Zegler's audition impressed everyone and footage from "West Side Story" "blew away" the Disney studio team.

"Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts," director Marc Webb said. "Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale."

Produced by Marc Platt, the upcoming film would expand the story and music from the original, insiders said.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the Oscar and Tony-winning pair behind "La la Land," "The Greatest Showman," and "Dear Evan Hansen," are set to write new songs for the film.

The 1938 "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" animated film, which is based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, tells the story of a princess who escapes from an evil queen envious of her beauty.

As she is hunted down, she takes refuge in the home of seven dwarfs.

Aside from her big role in "Snow White," Zegler has an upcoming breakout role as Maria in Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story," which will premiere this December.

Production for the Disney live action film is expected to start next year. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
