Blackpink’s upcoming documentary: What to expect
Blackpink isn’t done conquering the world: from dominating the music industry, they’re also debuting on the television screen with their first ever documentary!
On Wednesday, their documentary “Blackpink: Light Up the Sky” is set to premiere, giving their fans not only a glimpse of who they really are but every step they had to take to become the K-Pop group the world has grown to know and love.
During the press conference for the documentary on Tuesday, Rosé, Jennie, Lisa, and Jisoo, and director Caroline Suh talked about what fans could expect from Neftlix’s first ever original K-Pop documentary.
1. Diversity of culture
It’s no secret that Blackpink is composed of members from different cultures. Lisa is from Thailand, Jisoo grew up in South Korea, Jennie lived in New Zealand, and Rosé came from Australia.
In the documentary, the members shared that the viewers will get a glimpse of this aspect from them.
Not only will viewers get to see how each of them grew up, but also witness how they would speak in different languages and yet continue to be in harmony.
“When we were having the interview we’re able to open up and share some of our genuine thoughts and we were speaking in the language we were most comfortable in,” Rosé said.
Jennie and Rosé spoke in English, Jisoo in Korean, and Lisa in Thai.
It’s something that happens every day for them, according to Jennie.
“It symbolizes a part of Blackpink ... aspect our fans will like as well,” Rosé said.
2. Little girl versions of Blackpink members
The documentary will also showcase how aside from working hard, Blackpink members were simply born for the spotlight.
Clips from their childhood, when they were just little girls performing on their separate stages, will also be shown to viewers.
Lisa also hinted of scenes of when the group would even watch videos from their childhood together.
“We were watching video clips of our childhood,” Lisa said. “I think Rosé’s childhood was most impressive,” she added.
“There’s precious photos and footage from their childhood,” said director Caroline. “We were thankful Blackpink was willing to share to us.”
3. Members’ growth together through the years
Viewers will also get to see the members back when they were just teenagers who met each other for the first time and began training with each other.
“We were together since we were teenagers and now we’re in our 20s,” Jennie said, sharing how all of them felt like family already at this point. “We were able to see each other grow. We were able to share emotions in the world throughout the journey.”
Not only will the members get to talk about their growth, but the documentary is also set to showcase clips and videos from back when they were just trainees.
“I think from our trainee days we grew up together from [when] we were very young,” Rosé said.
Caroline said that she felt lucky that YG Entertainment had a lot of footages of Blackpink back when they were just trainees.
“We knew that we had all of this great material of them when they were really young to today,” Caroline said. “It’s rare to have that so we thought it would be great if we focus on how each of them evolved over the years and what it took for them in training school to become Blackpink.”
4. Each members’ personal stories
Fans will be able to see all of the members grow, but also learn each of the member’s personalities beyond the surface level. From how they view themselves, how they deal with homesickness, and how they respond within the group.
“We started out on this project thinking we wanted to show the more honest, genuine side of ourselves. Through heart-to-heart genuine and honest conversations, we get to know each other even deeper, realize how much we mean to each other,” Jisoo said.
She added that the group wanted to “share more of” themselves with their fans, the Blinks. “Blinks, we really wanted to share more of us to them, that’s why we started the project.”
Caroline said they “really wanted to just tell a personal story about how each of the Blackpink members became part of this phenomenom and what it’s like for them.”
5. Blood and sweat to get to the top
Working on the film, Caroline shared how she learned that the success of Blackpink was really built from all the years of hard work the women poured into their craft.
“Something I learned from their story was that their success is really hard won,” Caroline said. “They worked hard for it. Each one of the members is really strong-willed and fierce and went after their dreams and worked very hard for it.”
Aside from being friendly and down-to-earth, what was really common among them was “this tenacity,” Caroline added.
In the film, footages of the members can be seen way back when they were just starting as trainees. It took years after years of training for each of the member to be who they are now.
“They were all determined to make it and they’re also very supportive of each other and that’s very real. I could see that from spending time with them,” Caroline said.
Talking about their trainee days, Jennie shared that all four of them had a very clear purpose that they wanted to achieve as Blackpink.
Bonus: Netflix log-in icons
Just a cherry on top for Blinks out there: now that the documentary is about to be released, Netflix users will be able to change their log-in icons into images of the four members.
Now, users can decide whether they want their icons to be Jennie, Lisa, Rosé, or Jisoo! – RC, GMA News
