John Cena on why he’s a BTS fan: ‘I got interested in what the music stood for’

John Cena was the guest on the latest episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and he shared why he’s a fan of the biggest boyband in the world, BTS.

When told by host Jimmy Fallon that the BTS members had mentioned they wanted to meet him, the American wrestler and actor said he was “floored, like stopped my heart.”

John then explained to Jimmy how he became a fan. “When something becomes a thing, it’s open for criticisms. And I love what this band has done. Because they’re this massively popular thing and they’ve been so globally popular for so long. And I was like, OK, I should probably know about this.”

John said he was initially drawn to the group because they made rap music. “When I started to look at BTS and listen to their music, I was originally drawn because there are rappers in that crew. And they use some on their intro tracks and like bookend tracks, they use like sick ass boombox beats and actually rap so like yeah, I kinda like this, this is great!”

He said he then looked deeper into the music, and found that it stood for so much more.

“So I got interested in the music, then I got interested in what the music stood for. And they advocate self-love, they advocate don’t be afraid of failure. They advocate that you are enough. They’re kinda trying to shatter all the stereotypical difficulties and uncomfortable situations that we go through and they’re catering to an audience that is living that—young people,” he said.

He also commended the group for donating to causes, such as Black Lives Matter, and inspiring the BTS Army, their fans, to do the same.

“This global Army, this BTS Army, that is not just, like, geeked out fans. BTS donated a million bucks to Black Lives Matter, and Army was like, y’all if they can do it we can do it,” he said. “BTS Army charity gives a bunch to philanthropic causes.”

Apart from being great performers, the messages BTS sends also resonated with the people, said John.

“As an artist, as a performer, we have fun, we’re doing this stuff. But if we can resonate to the television, to you at home, to come out to your pocket to give to a cause, that’s work man. That’s work and that’s purpose, and that’s f** changing the world,” said the actor.

“How they conduct themselves as human beings and the message they send to the world, man that’s something special.”

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” is staging its BTS Week special, where the show will feature a new performance by the septet every night, plus interviews, games, and more.

Earlier, on BTS Week’s Day 2, the group performed their 2019 song “Home” at a fully furnished set designed to look like a, well, home, with a literal twist.

BTS members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook will also be the show’s guests on its Wednesday episode.

The group’s single “Dynamite” repeaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week.

Released last month, “Dynamite” spent its first two weeks on the chart at No. 1, and its third and fourth at No. 2. – RC, GMA News
