Millie Bobby Brown reveals the two strong women who inspired her when playing Enola Holmes
For "Enola Holmes," 16-year-old actress Millie Bobby Brown steps into the shoes of the rebellious younger sister of Sherlock Holmes, whose mother's mysterious disappearance prompts her to step out of the shadows and become a super sleuth in her own right.
But to play the role, the "Stranger Things" star found two strong women to look up to.
Taking place in 1884 England, "Enola Holmes" was set in the early days of women’s suffrage and a time in British history when the winds of social change were gaining speed on several fronts.
Fortunately, Enola was trained by her eccentric and free-thinking mother Eudoria played by Helena Bonham Carter in the movie. So while most girls her age are learning embroidery and other skills befitting a “proper” young lady, Enola’s education consists of science, cryptology, and martial arts.
"I have a mum who is very much like Eudoria," Millie revealed during a virtual interview.
"She's very liberal and laid back and very open and genuinely just one of the kindest people that I'll ever meet," she added.
Millie, who is also a producer on "Enola Holmes," also shared some fun conversations she had with her nan about the film.
"So I'm like, 'I'm playing Sherlock Holmes's little sister,' and she goes 'Sherlock Holmes has a little sister?' I was like, 'I know! That's what I said," she said.
In fact, Millie's nan practically lived through some of the struggles her character goes through in the film.
For example, corsets.
"I would tell her I was wearing a corset, and she'd tell me all about how she would wear those, and all that when she was little, [She would say] ‘Aw corset, oh they're so uncomfortable!' And so she would always have something to say about this story specifically. I love talking to her about it," Millie shared.
Here's another fun fact: Millie said her nan actually lived in a place called Bethanol Green, which was one of the many mind-boggling ciphers Enola had to crack throughout the movie.
"When I saw that Bethanol Green was on there, it felt like my grandma was in the film, so I was very, very touched," Millie shared.
"But I had incredible women guiding me through life [and] those are my two biggest supporters and people who I've generally grown up and wanted to be," she added.
"Enola Holmes" premieres on Netflix today, September 23.
The film, directed by Harry Bradbeer, also stars Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin as Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, with Louis Partridge as Lord Tewksbury. —JCB, GMA News
