'The Witcher': 7 interesting things you should know about

Henry Cavill came to meet the press and then his fans in Manila on Thursday to promote his latest project, The Witcher, on Netflix.

British actor who famously played Superman was every bit handsome and fit, yes, but at the fan meet, he surprised everyone by how gracious and generous he was.

Henry, together with program creator Laura Hissrich, shared a few bits and pieces about the fantasy series that will start streaming on December 20.

1. Henry was introduced to The Witcher via video games. “I’m a big PC gamer and I’ve been gaming since I was a young boy. After I met Lauren, she told me there was a series of books but I just assumed they were based upon what the games had created. Little did I know that Sapkowski had actually written them way before the games.”

2. Sapkowski is actually Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski who wrote The Witcher series of fantasy books. It is popularized by the RPG with the same name!

3. Henry shared he cut his holiday short to fly to New York and audition for the role. He was (1) that eager to play the role of Geralt and (2) that big of a fantasy genre and PC gaming fan

4. The show is so much bigger than they initially thought. According to Laura, she had just read the first book “The Last Wish” before Netflix approached her for the show.

“So getting to this has just been a dream come true. It’s so much bigger than what I thought it was going to be. I never expected to come to the Philippines, that’s for sure, and here we are,” Lauren said.

5. Henry went up against 207 potential Geralts, Laura revealed. [But] at the end of the day, what I realized was, as I continued writing the scripts, I always had Henry’s voice in my head. So when we met again, we immediately kicked off a great creative relationship,” she said.

6. According to Henry, Geralt’s greates power is “his ability to love.” Which is not to say it’s all lovey-dovey. The TV series has a lot of warlocks, monsters, mutants, and sword fighting, which Henry is pretty excited about; he did all his stunts! No doubles!

7. Henry says Geralt "is obviously not a hero. He wants to be a hero. His passion, his desire, is very much to be a white knight. But unfortunately, in the world that Sapkowski has created for him, it's impossible to do that without committing dark acts, and therefore you can't be a white knight."

But Henry shares a cool nuance about Sapkowski's writing: "Everyone is the hero of their own story, no matter how you meet them. And so in their mind, they're a hero, and if you're trying to stop them, you're a villain. And so there's nothing quite so clean cut as heroes and villains. And as far as which do I prefer playing [a villain or a hero], I really enjoy playing Geralt because it's not clean cut and it's not obvious and I get to play both sides of that, that fits."
