Geoffrey Rush is Albert Einstein in new ‘Genius’ TV series

One scientific genius who hasn’t been done much justice in film and television is Albert Einstein. Fortunately, all that’s about to change; National Geographic Channel has a new anthology series called “Genius,” and it aims to tell us the stories of some of history’s greatest minds.

Each season of “Genius” will focus on a different legendary innovator. Its first season revolves around Einstein and is based on is based on Walter Isaacson's best-selling book “Einstein: His Life and Universe.”

Playing the title role is Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush, who, from the video and promotional image provided, looks like he could have been separated from the scientist at birth. Not bad for a man who’s been an undead pirate, an Egyptian god, a language therapist, and an English spymaster.

“Genius” debuts in April, and will show us the many challenges—both personal and career-related—that Einstein faced in his life.

An eminent scientist, Einstein was the recipient of numerous honors such as the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics, and Time’s Person of the Century. His contributions to physics and the world are massive.

There aren’t enough films or television shows that celebrate history’s scientific luminaries. Sure, “A Beautiful Mind” and “The Theory of Everything” are great movies; unfortunately, they say little about John Nash and Stephen Hawking’s accomplishments in their respective fields, and why they’re considered two of the most important thinkers of our time.

Hopefully, “Genius” will dedicate several episodes to how Einstein developed his most significant theories.

The cast includes Johnny Flynn (“Lovesick”), who plays Einstein as a young man; Emily Watson (“Everest,” “The Theory of Everything”) as Elsa, Einstein’s second wife; and Seth Gabel (“Fringe”) as Michele Besso, one of Einstein’s closest friends.
