‘Miss Saigon’ 25th anniversary performance to be filmed, screened in theaters — report

The Daily Mail's showbiz columnist and theater correspondent Baz Bamigboye floated news on Thursday that there's not one, but two "Miss Saigon" films in the pipeline.

According to Bamigboye, the first film is footage from the 25th anniversary performance of the musical in West End, which stars Fil-Am theater actress Eva Noblezada as Kim and Filipino actor Jon Jon Briones as the Engineer, alongside Alistair Brammer as Chris.

"Producer Cameron Mackintosh worked with his own film team and executives at Universal on the anniversary special. And they’re still polishing it, prior to a special, one-off public screening around the world on October 16. It will be available to buy on DVD and digital soon afterwards." Bamigboye wrote.

He added that he was "assured" that the 2018 movie, possibly directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle, might still get the go signal and be made.

Bamigboye, however, made it clear that Noblezada and Briones are not shoe-in for the parts they played on stage.

"(2018) is a long way off, and Boyle still has plenty of time to mull over how he wants to cast it." he wrote.

"Miss Saigon", a musical that tells the love story between a woman from Vietnam and an American soldier, holds a special place in the Filipino audience's heart. The role of Kim was originally played by actress Lea Salonga in 1989, for which she won a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award.

Auditions were held in Manila in March for its next production. — APG, GMA News
