Madonna addresses critics over Met Gala 2016 dress
By BIANCA ROSE DABU, GMA News
Award-winning American singer-songwriter and actress Madonna made a statement in the Met Gala 2016 last week when she walked the red carpet in a Givenchy Haute Couture made of sheer material, exposing her butt and her breasts. While many are not all too surprised by this daring choice of the 57-year-old Queen of Pop, some still criticized her for parading in the dress.
In an Instagram post a few days after the event, which celebrates the opening of the Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology exhibition in New York City, Madonna said that her dress served as both a political and a fashion statement. “We have fought and continue to fight for civil rights and gay rights around the world. When it comes to women's rights, we are still in the dark ages. My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement,” she said. The artist added, “The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society. I have never thought in a limited way and I'm not going to start. We cannot effect change unless we are willing to take risks—by being fearless and by taking the road leas traveled by. That's how we change history.” In line with her sentiment, Madonna also urged her fans and followers to join her in fighting for gender equality.A video posted by Vogue (@voguemagazine) on
“If you have a problem with the way I dress, it is simply a reflection of your prejudice. I'm not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me?? As Nina Simone once said, the definition of freedom is being fearless. I remain Unapologetic and a Rebel, in this life and all the others. Join my fight for Gender Equality!” she concluded. — APG, GMA News
