PEP: Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino award goes to Lea Salonga
Lea Salonga was named as this year's recipient of the Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino award given out by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI). The honor was officially bestowed on Lea last night, November 26, at the 21st Awit Awards ceremony held at the Eastwood Central Plaza in Libis, Quezon City. Lea, unfortunately, was not able to grace the occasion as she is currently in Hong Kong for the musical play, Cinderella. In a video message played through a huge monitor, Lea thanked PARI for the recognition and "for all the opportunities" given to her throughout the years. The Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino award was instituted by PARI to honor local artists who have brought honor to the country by making a mark both here and abroadâa criteria which perfectly suited Lea's remarkable achievements particularly in the field of musical theater. Leaâwho made a name in the international scene in 1989 when she starred in the Broadway hit Miss Saigonâhave won prestigious international awards such as the Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics and Theatre World. Salonga's singing voice was also tapped in several animation movies like in Aladdin (1992), Mulan (1998) and Mulan II (2004). SURPRISE WINNERS. This year's edition of the celebrated local music event witnessed the emergence of young talents taking home some of the major awards.
