GMA Network launches anti-piracy video campaign featuring Kuya Kim Atienza

GMA Network's staunch fight against piracy continues with the launch of Kuya Kim Atienza's new anti-piracy video during "The Piracy Cybercrime Nexus: Risks to Users and Challenges in Disrupting the Criminal Ecosystem" anti-piracy symposium last November 13 at the Marriott Hotel. The event, co-organized by GMA Network, together with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), ACE, and Globe Telecom, addressed the rising threat of online piracy in the Philippines.

During the symposium, a recent study by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) revealed that Filipino consumers who access pirated content are at severe risk of cyber threats. The Network and its partners advocate for stronger anti-piracy measures and increased consumer awareness to combat this.

Kuya Kim's latest video campaign highlights the devastating impact of piracy on the creative industry and the dangers it poses to consumers. The videos emphasize the importance of supporting Filipino content creators, the risks associated with pirated content, and the need for consumer education. With these key messages, GMA Network and Kuya Kim aim to inspire a new generation of responsible viewers and protect the future of Philippine entertainment.

"I'd like to thank my home network, GMA-7, who recently named me an anti-piracy ambassador. I've been blessed with the ability to explain complex topics in a simple and relatable way on my TV shows. Like, what is cybersecurity? It's a term derived from 'cybernetics,' a field of study from the 1970s. Essentially, cybersecurity is about protecting information and systems from digital threats. Things like this are what we need to communicate these technical concepts to Gen Z and Millennials, in a way that's easy to understand and engaging. That is what we, in GMA, is committed to do," said Kuya Kim.

Kuya Kim, known for his ability to break down complex things, emphasizes the risks of digital piracy in one of his video plugs, warning viewers about the hidden threats lurking within pirated downloads.

The video series also tackles the negative economic and social impacts of piracy. One video, aligned with Dr. Watters' findings, explains how piracy discourages investment in new Filipino content by diminishing the perceived value of creative works. Another video highlights how piracy undermines the financial security of artists and creators, potentially stifling creativity and innovation within the Philippine entertainment industry.

By launching this informative video series, GMA Network, together with Kuya Kim Atienza and other Kapuso anti-piracy ambassadors, aim to empower Filipino viewers to make responsible choices. The videos encourage viewers to support legitimate content creators and utilize legal platforms for their entertainment needs. This initiative reflects a commitment to consumer education and aligns with Dr. Watters' recent findings in his research, ultimately aiming to create a sustainable future for the Philippine creative landscape.

"Digital piracy stifles the creativity of artists and creators by diminishing the value of their art. It makes it harder for Filipino content creators to gain visibility and financial support. One of the biggest effects of digital piracy is revenue loss on film, TV, music, and software companies that rely on intellectual property for their income. Let us support our creative industries," he ends.
