MTRCB OKs Avengers: Endgame with Chinese subtitles

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) found nothing wrong with the special screenings of Avengers: Endgame with Chinese subtitles in selected cinemas.

According to a report by JP Soriano in GMA's 24 Oras on Thursday, MTRCB chairperson Rachel Arenas said that the distributor of the film had two versions of the movie approved by authorities—one with the Chinese subtitles and one without.

Despite the criticism of some moviegoers against the subtitles, Arenas said that what really matters is that the cinemas follow the regulations on parental guidance for audiences.

She, however, reminded the managements of movie houses to properly inform their customers about the special screenings.

"So since talagang mapupuno 'yung movie houses ng mga manunuod sana naman masabi niyo na lang rin sa movie house na ganito ano yan walang sub title sa two may sub title sa three wala sa four wala ano bang gusto nyo?" she said.

Some customers were irked by the idea of having to watch the much-awaited Marvel movie with Chinese subtitles. Some who bought tickets in advance said they were not informed about it.

Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, which operates some of the cinemas that show the Marvel movie with Chinese subtitles, previously said that they came up with the special screenings as part of promoting cultural diversity.

"In recent years, we have noticed a strong demand from moviegoers coming from other countries, particularly those from China," it said. "We have decided to make out cinemas accessible to foreign-speaking moviegoers by including subtitles in select screenings of the biggest movie of the year."

It announced on Monday that tickets are refundable for those who do not want to watch the movie with Chinese subtitles.

According to the Bureau of Immigration, there were over three million Chinese nationals who arrived in the country from 2016 to 2018. —Dona Magsino/LDF, GMA News
